It is thought that in the C14th the village flourished as a result of the woollen industry. Rather than pull down the existing St Andrews and All Saints to build a larger one the D'Espania family retained it and the D'Ou family built a new one on the same consecrated land.This occurrence of two churches in one churchyard is unique in Essex but there are six other examples in the country - Swaffham Prior - Cambridgeshire, Trimly -Suffolk, Alvingham - Lincolnshire, Reepham - Norfolk, South Walsham - Norfolk andEvesham - Worcestershire.The church is not normally open to visitors particularly in the winter!
